“No” is one of the words we hear most when we try something new. “You can not,” “You must not go that way,” “It will never go well,” “You should not try at all.” To confront this very normal situation, Pilar Jericó, doctor and businesswoman, recommends that “you ground your fears by imagining the worst that could happen and then fight for your dream.”

Two techniques that overcome your fears

Establish the ground connection to reality

The first technique that Jericó proposes is called: to establish the ground connection to reality. This involves listening to what other people are telling you and acquiring their comments. Here is an example that will help you understand. In Jericó’s case, she decided to move to the United States while pregnant to start a project. Everyone told her it would be impossible and it would not go well.

People told her, for example, that if she went to the United States for too long, she would lose her clients. So she established a grounding for her fears, thought about it for a long time, talked to her clients, and was able to make them all fully understand. She fought for her dreams.

The second technique that Pilar Jericó suggests is to imagine the worst that could happen. And evaluate the risk involved. To do that, you have to think about what could go wrong. Then you need to consider whether it is really worth the sacrifice and the hard work.

Jericó, to use her as an example again, did the same. What was the worst thing that could happen to her on her American adventure trip? Maybe her investment would not have yielded good results? Or maybe the loneliness of being so far away from her friends would have given her a reality check?

It is now the case that you have to analyze each risk quietly. And once that is done, find out if it is a reality that you are prepared to face. And so if you decide that you are ready, you have to move forward with all the consequences in mind.

This is how Pilar Jericó came to some very interesting conclusions. Life goes by so fast, but we are enriched by the experiences we accumulate. So if you really have confidence in something and you have thought and considered it thoroughly whether it is achievable, then why not? Maybe it’s better not to be so attentive to all the people who say “you can not”. Instead, turn it into “I can” and no one will stop me.
