The Three Men: A Tale Of Humility

The three men were good friends and always helped each other. One evening they met to discuss the possible solutions. They agreed that the best thing would be to go to the nearest village, which was four days away, to buy water there.

They told about their plans to everyone. Although all the inhabitants of the village lacked water, no one offered to travel with them. The three men therefore left early the next morning almost without food, but determined to carry out their mission.

If they did not succeed, they would most likely die. They had divided their supplies sensibly so that they could reach for the whole trip.

Water for everyone

The ancient and inspiring tale continues to describe the journey of the three men. They walked and walked, almost without making a stop for almost four days in a row. When they arrived at the next village, they were all sweating and exhausted. But they were happy because they knew they were now close to the goal of their noble mission.

The residents of the village gave them a bed to sleep in and some food right away. The three men were very grateful. The following day, they filled their tub with water and strapped it to their mule, which could barely carry all that weight.

The villagers did not want payment for the water, so men felt so lucky and happy.

People warned them to leave during the day because the sun was so terribly strong and it could do away with them. The three men listened to them, and at sunset they then began their journey home.

The three men learn a valuable lesson

When it was morning, the three men decided to lie down for a few hours to get some rest, for the sun had begun to appear. As the sun was setting, they decided to continue their journey.

They thought they had already reached halfway and thought of their families, which filled them with enthusiasm. They also knew that their people would receive them with big smiles on their faces.

But when the sun rose, they could see that they were in a completely unknown forest. They realized they were lost.

Although the three men were now worried, they were still trying to think carefully. Eventually, they decided to continue in the direction they thought was right. But a little later they could see that they were still lost, and it continued in the same way for the next three days.

They had almost run out of supplies, and they found it harder and harder to find their way home as they got farther and farther away.

An unexpected outcome

When they came down from a mountain, they saw an almost dead tree with only one fruit left. But it was a very small fruit, so all three men threw themselves upon it. They had no idea how to share it.

While trying to devise a solution to this, the three men saw a shepherd coming towards them with his flock of sheep. He was very old and seemed very kind.

The man came to them, and when he saw that they were tired and hungry, he asked them what had happened to them. The old man then confessed that he was in fact a wizard who could help them.

But each of the three men had to come up with a proposal for a solution to their problem. And only if the three of them came up with the same solution that emphasized their friendship would he help them.

The right solution for the three men

According to this inspiring tale, the first man said to the wizard,  “If you have magical abilities, make the food disappear.” The wizard admonished him. No solution can come by magic.

Then the other man said,  “Make the fruit bigger so that there is enough for all three of us.” The wizard rebuked him in the same way. Real solutions do not try to change by the external factors, but by the internal ones instead.

Finally, the third man said,  “Make us smaller so that the little fruit will be big enough for all of us.” The sorcerer liked that solution and said: “If we are in difficulty, the solution is always to make ourselves smaller, more humble”.

Then he took two steps back and disappeared. He left his sheep to the three men as a gift. Just at that moment it started to rain and when it stopped, they could see that they were now standing very close to their own village.
